Retaining Walls & Stairs · Lincoln, NE

Retaining walls built for Nebraska's freeze-thaw cycles.

Most retaining wall failures come from poor drainage behind the wall. Water pressure builds in saturated soil and pushes. We install drainage aggregate behind every wall we build. That's the fix most crews skip.

What's Included

Built to hold for decades, not seasons.

01

Site assessment & drainage plan

We evaluate soil type, slope, and existing drainage before specifying materials or starting excavation. The design drives the build, not the other way around.

02

Excavation & base preparation

Proper footing depth and a compacted base are what prevent the wall from shifting over time. We don't rush this part.

03

Drainage aggregate backfill

Gravel packed behind the wall relieves hydrostatic pressure. This is the #1 thing that prevents wall failure. We do it on every wall, every time.

04

Block, stone, or boulder installation

We work with Allan Block, natural fieldstone, and boulders. Material is chosen based on your site conditions, slope, and aesthetic.

05

Batter & geogrid (taller walls)

Walls over 3 feet are built with the correct batter angle and geogrid reinforcement layers for long-term structural stability.

06

Final grading & site cleanup

Backfill is graded away from the wall, excess material is removed, and the site is left clean. We don't leave a mess for you to deal with.

Why Creative Landscaping

The drainage fix most crews skip.

Drainage behind every wall

We install drainage aggregate behind every retaining wall we build. It's what keeps the wall from pushing forward under Nebraska's spring freeze-thaw pressure. Skipping this is how walls fail at 5 years instead of 50.

Design before we dig

Every wall project gets a digital layout before we start. You know where the wall goes, how tall it is, and what it will look like from the yard and the street.

Repair and new construction

We build new walls and repair existing ones that are bulging, leaning, or losing joints. Some repairs require pulling the wall and rebuilding with proper drainage. We'll tell you honestly which you need.

What Lincoln Homeowners Say

Real results. Real neighbors.

★★★★★

“I had Creative Landscaping fix two falling retaining walls and take out five garden beds and replace them with grass for my dogs. The yard is now much easier to care for and the dogs love it! Creative Landscaping was competitive in their pricing, professional, and did exactly what I wanted. I highly recommend them and will use them if I have another project in the future.”

“So glad I chose these guys! Everyone I dealt with was awesome. They put in a new retaining wall for me, fixed all the low spots in the yard, then did some sod and seeding and my flag pole for me. I still did go out and get 3 quotes. They came out in the middle but the experience I had during the quote was by far better than the others, and along with a recommendation from a friend, I chose them. Thank you all at Creative Landscaping for all you did.”

“Creative Landscaping completely transformed our home. Tyler was awesome to help create 3 phases of our project — starting small with rock and plants around the perimeter, then adding trees to our back fence line to create more privacy, and eventually adding a paver patio. Booking time with them was super easy, they were kind and respectful, and provided top notch service. I had a few plants that struggled and they caught it and replaced them before I could even reach out. Don’t waste your time getting multiple bids, just hire Creative Landscaping.”

Common Questions

Retaining Wall FAQs

How long do retaining walls last in Nebraska?
Block walls built with proper drainage last 25-50 years. Natural stone and boulder walls can last a lifetime with minimal maintenance. The key variable is drainage behind the wall.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Lincoln?
Walls under 4 feet generally don't require a permit in Lincoln. Taller walls typically do. We'll check the requirements for your specific project before we start.
What causes retaining walls to fail?
Poor drainage behind the wall is the #1 cause. Water pressure builds up in saturated soil and pushes the wall outward. We install drainage aggregate behind every wall to prevent this. That's the fix most installers skip.
What's the difference between block, natural stone, and boulder walls?
Block (such as Allan Block) is the most cost-effective and uniform in appearance. Natural stone blends naturally into the landscape with a classic look. Boulders work well for large grade changes and naturalistic designs. We recommend based on your site and aesthetic.
Can you repair an existing retaining wall?
Yes. We repair walls that are bulging, leaning, or losing joints. Some repairs involve pulling the wall down and rebuilding with proper drainage. We'll tell you honestly which approach your wall needs after we assess it.
